The positive side of flock cameras #flock #camera #albany #newyork #news #safety

The short version: A feel-good Albany case is being used to sell Flock's whole network — but one solved plot doesn't justify blanket plate tracking of everyone else.

Our Take

The Davis Download is highlighting a case out of Albany where a reported plot against the state capitol was apparently disrupted, with Flock cameras getting some of the credit alongside the FBI. We appreciate the creator sharing a real example — that's exactly the kind of case Flock Safety's marketing team loves to spotlight. But one success story doesn't tell you what happened to the millions of innocent drivers whose plates got logged, timestamped, and stored that same week in Albany and everywhere else these cameras sit.

That's the trick with ALPR promotion: a single dramatic win gets all the airtime, while the quiet, permanent tracking of ordinary commuters, churchgoers, and protesters never makes the highlight reel. A camera network built to catch the rare bad actor is, by design, a system that watches everybody else too — no warrant, no suspicion required. Supporters rarely mention retention periods, data-sharing agreements with other agencies, or how easily this infrastructure can be repurposed for immigration sweeps or tracking people seeking reproductive care.

We're glad a credit to the creator for surfacing the story is due, and we're glad nothing worse happened in Albany. But before any town board approves more Flock cameras because of one good outcome, residents deserve the full picture of what mass plate surveillance costs everyone else.
