These votes get framed as routine budget items, sandwiched between road repaving and parks funding, when in reality they're a chance to reauthorize a system that logs every car that passes a camera, tracks where you go, and often shares that data well beyond city limits.

Renewal season is exactly when public pressure matters most. Once a contract is signed, it's usually locked in for a year or more, and councils rarely revisit the terms unless residents show up and make noise about audit logs, data retention, out-of-state sharing agreements, and whether the cameras are actually solving the crimes they were pitched to solve.
