The pitch is straightforward — ShotSpotter microphones hear a bang, that alert auto-launches a drone, pings dispatch, and simultaneously queries a real-time crime center stitched together with automated license plate readers. It's marketed as a seamless "multilayered response," but what's really being described is a fully automated trigger chain where an algorithm's guess about gunfire sets off airborne cameras and plate-reading databases with no human in the loop deciding whether that response is warranted.

The homicide clearance numbers cited — jumping from the 45-65% range up to 90-100% — are eye-catching, but they're coming from the vendor with every incentive to make its own product look indispensable. SoundThinking has a long history of overstating ShotSpotter's reliability, and pairing it with drones and ALPRs doesn't fix the underlying accuracy problem, it just gives false positives a lot more surveillance firepower to act on. Every one of those "simultaneous alerts" also means more plate scans, more drone flights over neighborhoods, and more data sitting in a crime center database, regardless of whether an actual shooting occurred.
