Smarter Vehicle Access & LPR Identification in South Florida | Stenology

Stenology · 1 week ago

The short version: A South Florida installer pitches license-plate-reading gate systems as 'smarter access,' but every new private LPR camera adds another node to the surveillance web.

Our Take

Stenology's pitch is standard vendor fare: swap your gate clicker for a camera that reads plates and waves in 'recognized' vehicles. It's framed purely as convenience and property security, and for a homeowners' association or private lot, that's an easy sell. What's left out of the pitch is where that plate data goes after the gate opens, how long it's stored, and whether it ever gets pooled with commercial ALPR networks or shared with law enforcement down the line.

This is exactly how the automated license plate reader footprint keeps expanding without public debate — not through a single big government rollout, but through thousands of private installs at gated communities, apartment complexes, and parking lots across Florida and beyond. Each camera is sold as a standalone convenience, but together they form a de facto tracking grid that can log where you live, work, and visit, often with none of the oversight that applies to police-operated systems.

We're not accusing this installer of wrongdoing, but we think buyers and residents deserve to ask hard questions before plate-reading cameras go up at the gate: who controls the data, who can query it, and can it be linked to networks like Flock Safety. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your neighborhood, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion where you live.
