FLOCK Cameras Used for Traffic Stops? Palm Bay Police Surveillance Exposed

Thin Blue Lie Audits · 5 months ago

The short version: A Florida auditor's footage reportedly shows Palm Bay PD using Flock ALPR hits to trigger routine traffic stops, raising fresh mission-creep concerns.

Our Take

Thin Blue Lie Audits says their camera caught Palm Bay police leaning on Flock Safety ALPR data for everyday traffic stops — not the stolen-car and Amber Alert scenarios the company always leads with in its sales pitch. We haven't independently verified every detail in the video, but the pattern it describes is exactly what critics have warned about since these camera networks started popping up on street corners nationwide: a tool sold as narrow and emergency-only quietly becomes a general-purpose policing shortcut.

That shift matters because it happens with zero public vote and almost no transparency. Residents don't get asked whether they're fine with a network of plate readers logging their daily movements so officers can run pretext stops. Audits like this one are often the only check we get, since most departments won't volunteer how often they query Flock data or for what reasons — and 'traffic enforcement' is a vague enough label to cover a lot of ground.

Credit to Thin Blue Lie Audits for putting a camera on it and making local police explain themselves in real time. If you want to see whether your own neighborhood is wired up the same way, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on unchecked ALPR use where you live, our take-action guide is a good place to start.
