Beaumont Police address flock camera concerns

12NewsNow · 2 months ago

The short version: Beaumont PD tries to reassure the public on Flock ALPRs, but 'trust us' policies don't replace enforceable limits and real audits.

Our Take

12NewsNow's report on Beaumont PD's damage control is a familiar script: a department rolls out Flock Safety cameras, misuse scandals pile up elsewhere, and suddenly local officials are in front of a camera promising their use is different. Credit to the station for pressing the issue, but 'we have policies' isn't the same as independent oversight. Policies get written by the same agencies that operate the cameras, and they can be quietly rewritten or ignored with zero public notice.

What actually matters is who can query the system, how long plate data sits in the database, whether it's shared with ICE or other outside agencies, and who audits that activity. Those are the questions reporters and residents should keep asking after the cameras stay rolling and the news crews leave. Verbal assurances from a police spokesperson don't bind the next chief, the next contract renewal, or the next data-sharing agreement.
