Flock cameras replaced with another brand in this Wisconsin town

WLUK-TV FOX 11 · 4 months ago

The short version: Grand Chute, WI dropped Flock but kept its license plate reader network by switching brands, proving the fight isn't about one company — it's about the technology itself.

Our Take

Credit to WLUK-TV FOX 11 for catching what a lot of towns hope you won't notice: canceling a Flock Safety contract doesn't mean canceling mass surveillance. Grand Chute's board may have voted out Flock, but the plate-reading cameras stayed up, just rebranded. That's the shell game we keep seeing play out nationwide — public pressure targets a company name, and local officials respond by swapping vendors instead of asking whether they need a network of cameras logging every car's movements at all.

This matters because the surveillance infrastructure is the actual problem, not just who's selling it to your town. Whether it's Flock, Motorola, or some other outfit with a similar pitch, the underlying system still vacuums up plate numbers, timestamps, and location data on totally innocent drivers, often shared across jurisdictions with little public oversight. Swapping the logo doesn't change the privacy math.

If your town is having this same debate, don't let officials frame it as a brand preference. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your streets, and use our take-action resources to push for real accountability, not just a vendor switch.
