HTSS Magazine's demo video is a straightforward vendor showcase — the kind of clip meant to sell property managers and parking operators on "frictionless" license plate recognition. But watch enough of these and a pattern emerges: every strip mall, apartment complex, and parking garage that bolts on an LPR camera is adding another node to a private surveillance network that nobody voted for and most people never see.

Parking management is often the on-ramp for this technology. It gets pitched as convenience — no more paper tickets, no more gate arms — but the same camera capturing your plate for a parking transaction can just as easily feed a database that's queried by police, sold to data brokers, or linked up with networks like Flock Safety's. Once that plate-and-timestamp record exists, you rarely get to control where it goes next.

We're not saying every parking lot camera is part of some grand conspiracy. But the normalization matters: each "harmless" commercial deployment lowers the bar for the next one, and the next one, until plate readers are just wallpaper.
