Sheriff credits FLOCK in arrest of man for kidnapping Spartanburg Co. child
The short version: FOX Carolina reports a Spartanburg sheriff crediting Flock cameras in a child kidnapping arrest, but the feel-good framing skips the bigger surveillance picture.
Our Take
Every time a local news station runs a story like this one from FOX Carolina, it follows the same script: sheriff praises Flock, camera gets credit, case closed, roll credits. We're glad a child was found safe, full stop. But "Flock helped catch a kidnapper" is also exactly the sentence Flock Safety's sales team wants on every local news broadcast in America, and that's worth noticing.
These success-story clips are how a company with cameras scanning hundreds of millions of plates a month builds political cover in county after county. What almost never makes the segment: how long that footage sits in a database, who else can query it, whether there's any audit trail, or how many of those scans belong to people who've never been suspected of anything. One dramatic rescue doesn't tell you how the system behaves on an ordinary Tuesday.
If there's a Flock camera reading plates in your county, you have a right to know where it is and how it's governed. Check our map to see what's already been documented near you, and if you want to push back on unchecked expansion, our take-action page has concrete next steps.
