The Empire strikes back — against privacy concerns
The short version: A Darth Vader cosplayer roasting San Diego's ALPR program at a council meeting is funny, but the surveillance behind the joke is dead serious.
Our Take
Credit where it's due: FOX54 Huntsville picked up a genuinely great piece of citizen theater. A guy in a Vader costume stood up at a San Diego City Council meeting and told members the Empire would love their license plate reader program. It's a bit, but it's a bit with teeth — because the joke only lands if everyone in that room already knows what Flock Safety cameras are quietly capable of.
That's the real story buried under the costume. City councils across the country have approved these networks with barely a public hearing, let alone someone showing up as a Sith Lord to point out the obvious: a system that logs every car's movements, time-stamped and searchable, is exactly the kind of tool an authoritarian government would dream of building. San Diego residents are lucky this time someone made it impossible to ignore. Most cities never get that moment of clarity.
Humor is a fine way to get people's attention, but attention has to turn into action. If you want to know whether your own city has quietly wired up plate-reader cameras on your commute, check our camera map, and if you find them, head to our take-action page for ways to push back before your council needs its own Vader moment.
