Ongoing debate on Flock surveillance cameras

FOX 26 Houston · 3 weeks ago

The short version: FOX 26 Houston covers the local fight over whether to expand Flock ALPR cameras onto public streets, and we say the burden of proof is on the city.

Our Take

Credit to FOX 26 Houston for putting a camera on this debate, because these fights are happening in city council chambers all over the country with almost no public notice. Whenever a local government proposes "adding more Flock cameras," the pitch is always the same: safety, efficiency, a few solved cases. What rarely gets mentioned is the permanent record of everywhere you drive, stored in a database your city doesn't fully control and shared with agencies you never voted for.

The real question isn't whether ALPRs can help solve a crime here or there — sometimes they do. It's whether blanketing public streets with always-on license plate tracking is a price residents actually agreed to pay, and whether there are real limits on retention, access, and who else gets to query that data. "Keep them away from public streets" isn't an extreme position; it's a reasonable line when the alternative is a city-wide net that logs every car, every day, regardless of suspicion.

If you're in Houston or anywhere else watching your council consider a Flock contract, don't wait for the vote. Check our camera map to see what's already deployed near you, and use our take-action resources to push for transparency, retention limits, or an outright no before the cameras go up.
