Flock Cameras

Inno Bar · 4 months ago

The short version: A spotter video from Inno Bar casually catalogs Flock cameras alongside weather and travel-time cams, showing how invisible these devices have become in daily life.

Our Take

Credit to Inno Bar for this one — it's less an exposé and more a roadside inventory, the kind of video where a Flock camera gets mentioned in the same breath as a weather cam or a travel-time sign. That's exactly the problem. When license plate readers are filed next to municipal infrastructure in the public imagination, we lose sight of what they actually do: log your plate, time, and location, every time you drive past, and feed it into a searchable database that police departments (and increasingly private companies) can query without a warrant.

Videos like this are useful precisely because they're unscripted. They capture how normalized this hardware has become — bolted to poles next to traffic signals, blending into the furniture of American roads. Most drivers have no idea which of those poles is just watching the weather and which one is building a permanent record of their movements.

If you want to know whether one of these cameras is sitting on your route, check our camera map. And if you'd rather your city not have them at all, our take-action page walks you through pushing back at the local level.
