Protect Your Mobile Privacy with RayHunter #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 months ago

The short version: STS Technologies' short on EFF's RayHunter highlights a real tool for spotting IMSI catchers, part of the same surveillance-industrial complex as Flock's ALPR network.

Our Take

Credit to STS Technologies LLC for putting a spotlight on RayHunter, the EFF's open-source project for sniffing out IMSI catchers and rogue cell towers. These Stingray-style devices trick your phone into connecting to a fake tower so someone can log your location or intercept your traffic, and they've been used by police departments with little public oversight for years. A $20 open-source detector running on cheap hardware is a genuine win for people trying to claw back some visibility into when they're being tracked.

We cover ALPRs here, not cell-site simulators, but the throughline matters: both are surveillance tools that got deployed first and explained to the public never. Flock cameras log your plate, location, and travel patterns automatically and feed it into a searchable database that cops nationwide can query, often without a warrant and without you ever knowing a camera was there. IMSI catchers do the same thing to your phone. Different hardware, same philosophy — normalize the dragnet, worry about oversight later, if ever.

Tools like RayHunter are useful, but detection is a stopgap, not a fix. The real work is knowing what's watching you and pushing back on the policies that let it happen unchecked. Check our camera map to see what's logging your plates in your own neighborhood, and hit take action if you want to push your local council to actually regulate this stuff instead of rubber-stamping another vendor contract.
