KANSAS CONSTITUTIONAL CITIZENS MILITIA ARE WE BECOMING A SURVEILLANCE STATE
The short version: A Kansas militia channel digs into Wichita PD's transparency portal and asks the question more Americans should be asking: are we building a surveillance state one camera at a time?
Our Take
Credit to Mary S. for doing the unglamorous work of actually reading police transparency portals instead of just taking a department's word for it. That Wichita PD even has a portal is itself a sign of how normalized ALPR networks have become — departments now expect scrutiny, but they're betting most people won't bother showing up to look. Mary did. That's the whole ballgame with this technology: it survives on public apathy, and dies a little every time someone pulls back the curtain.
What makes this video notable isn't a bombshell revelation — it's the framing. A constitutional militia group asking "are we becoming a surveillance state" is a reminder that opposition to mass ALPR deployment isn't a left or right issue. It's a Fourth Amendment issue, a local-control issue, and a "why does my local PD have a live feed of everywhere I drive" issue. Flock Safety and similar vendors have been remarkably successful at getting that question to not get asked in city council meetings. Videos like this put it back on the table.
If Wichita's portal has you wondering what's actually watching your own commute, check our camera map to see documented ALPR locations near you, and visit our take-action page for concrete steps to push back at the local level.
