Police Facial Recognition Flaw Almost RUINS Pregnant Woman's Life

The Young Turks · 3 years ago

The short version: TYT covers a wrongful robbery charge against an eight-months-pregnant Black woman, another case of cops trusting flawed facial recognition over real investigative work.

Our Take

The Young Turks are shining a light on yet another case where a computer's guess got treated as gospel. An eight-months-pregnant Black woman ends up facing robbery charges because facial recognition software spit out a match and officers apparently stopped thinking right there. This isn't a glitch in the system — it's the system working as designed, and the design is bad.

We cover license plate readers here, but this story is the same rot in a different flavor. Whether it's a camera scanning your plate every time you drive to work or software scanning your face from a grainy still, the pattern is identical: opaque tech gets deployed with zero real oversight, cops treat an algorithm's output as probable cause, and the burden falls on regular people — disproportionately Black and Brown people — to prove their own innocence after the fact. Flock's ALPR network already lets departments build location histories on drivers with no warrant and often no public accountability. Add facial recognition into that pipeline and you get a surveillance dragnet that can put a pregnant woman in handcuffs based on a bad match nobody double-checked.

Credit to TYT for keeping this story in front of people, because these near-misses rarely get national attention until someone's life is nearly wrecked. If you want to see how much of this camera infrastructure has already crept into your own town, check our map, and if you're ready to push back on it locally, our take-action page has a place to start.
