Don't believe the hype: The reality of Flock cameras #flock #surveillance

Business Reform · 1 month ago

The short version: Business Reform nails it: Flock crediting itself for a nationwide crime drop is rooster-and-sunrise logic, not evidence.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: Business Reform's rooster-and-sunrise line is the cleanest takedown we've seen of Flock's favorite sales pitch. Crime rates have been falling across the country since their pandemic-era spike, in cities with Flock cameras and cities without them. Correlation isn't causation, and a company that profits from fear has every incentive to blur that line.

This matters because "it works" is doing all the heavy lifting in Flock's pitch to city councils and police chiefs. If the actual driver is a national trend that has nothing to do with license plate readers, then every budget dollar, every data-sharing agreement, and every mile of road blanketed in cameras gets justified on a false premise. Once that infrastructure is built, it doesn't get dismantled just because the stats were cherry-picked.

Before your town signs another contract, ask for the receipts, not the marketing deck. See what's already watching your neighborhood on our camera map, and if you want to push back, our take-action page has the tools to start that fight locally.
