Palm Bay covers FLOCK cameras after suspension due to permits

FOX 35 Orlando · 2 months ago

The short version: Palm Bay's Flock cameras got hooded after a permit snafu, and residents are using the pause to demand the whole system stay dark for good.

Our Take

Credit to FOX 35 Orlando for catching a detail that surveillance companies would rather you not notice: these systems get installed fast, and the paperwork often follows later, if at all. Palm Bay spent $42,000 of public money on 17 cameras, and now even basic questions — like whether proper permits existed — are unresolved. That's not a technicality. It's a sign of how little scrutiny these rollouts get before cameras start logging every car that passes.

What's encouraging here is the residents' reaction. Given a brief pause, they're not asking for a fix — they're asking for the cameras to stay down. That instinct is correct. A permit problem is a convenient off-ramp, but the deeper issue is that a city council approved blanket vehicle tracking without demanding transparency, audit access, or a real public debate about whether it was needed at all.

Towns across the country are quietly adding these poles, usually with little more than a vendor pitch deck as justification. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your drives, and use our take-action resources if you want your own city council to answer the questions Palm Bay is only now being forced to ask.
