Mansfield Ohio Drone Program

Technocracy Dissident · 1 year ago

The short version: Technocracy Dissident spotlights Mansfield, Ohio's police drone program, and we see the same creeping 'eyes above' logic that drives Flock's camera network nationwide.

Our Take

Credit to Technocracy Dissident for digging into Mansfield, Ohio's drone-as-policing pitch. The branding is always the same: "ahead of the game," "next generation," a shiny new tool sold as pure public safety. What rarely gets mentioned at the press conference is who's watching the footage, how long it's kept, and what happens when a drone program quietly merges with a license plate reader network and a few data-sharing agreements. Mansfield isn't an outlier — it's a preview of where a lot of mid-size cities are headed.

Drones and ALPRs solve different problems on paper, but they're part of the same playbook: normalize constant monitoring by rolling it out piece by piece, department by department, with little public debate and even less independent auditing. Once the infrastructure exists, mission creep is not a hypothetical — it's the default. A tool pitched for missing persons or traffic crashes becomes a tool for tracking protestors, exes, or anyone a cop decides is worth a look.
