Dallas PD to share Flock camera info with public safety committee

WFAA · 4 weeks ago

The short version: WFAA reports Dallas PD will brief a public safety committee on Flock camera data, citing homicide clearances, but oversight details remain thin.

Our Take

Credit to WFAA for flagging that Dallas PD is finally bringing its Flock Safety numbers in front of a public oversight body. That's a step in the right direction, but "we'll share some data with a committee" is a long way from real transparency. Clearance-rate claims sound impressive in a press briefing, yet without independent audits, retention policy details, and access logs, the public is still being asked to take the department's word for it.

This is the pattern we keep seeing nationwide: police departments lean hard on the crime-solving narrative while staying vague on how long plate data is stored, who can query it, and whether other agencies or ICE-adjacent partners get access. A single committee presentation isn't oversight — it's a press opportunity unless residents and council members push for binding policy, audit trails, and public reporting requirements.

If you're in Dallas or anywhere Flock is expanding, don't wait for a committee hearing to find out how surveilled you are — check our camera map to see what's already watching your streets, and use our take-action resources to push your local officials for real accountability, not just a data dump.
