Flock Safety ROLLS OUT license plate camera updates

Fox Business Clips · 2 months ago

The short version: Fox Business frames Flock Safety's camera 'updates' around a rosy missing-persons stat while glossing over the backlash its tracking features have triggered nationwide.

Our Take

Fox Business Clips packaged this segment the way Flock Safety itself would probably script it: a nod to 'backlash,' then a quick pivot to the company's favorite talking point — 10,000 missing people located in a year. That number comes straight from Flock's own marketing, and it's doing a lot of work to justify a network of cameras that logs the movements of millions of law-abiding drivers every single day. Credit to the Fox Business team for at least mentioning the pushback, but a 90-second clip isn't going to explain why civil liberties groups, local officials, and everyday residents keep raising alarms.

The 'tracking' feature getting attention here isn't some hypothetical edge case — it's the whole business model. Flock's systems are built to stitch together plate reads into travel patterns, and once that data exists, it doesn't stay neatly confined to finding missing persons. It gets shared across agencies, sometimes with immigration enforcement, sometimes with out-of-state departments investigating things like abortion travel, often with little public oversight of how long it's kept or who can query it. A feel-good statistic doesn't answer basic questions about retention policies, audit logs, or what happens when access gets misused.

This is exactly the pattern we track at DeFlock: a helpful use case up front, a much bigger surveillance footprint underneath. If you want to see how far this network has spread in your own area, check our camera map, and if you'd rather do something about it than just read about it, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the local level.
