VERIFY: If you've been Flocked, can you request the video or data?

FOX54 News Huntsville · 1 month ago

The short version: FOX54 Huntsville asks a simple but loaded question: if Flock cameras track you, can you actually see your own data? Spoiler—it's not easy.

Our Take

Credit to FOX54 News Huntsville for asking the question most of us assume has an obvious answer and then finding out it doesn't. If a network of cameras is logging your plate, your location, and your travel patterns dozens of times a day, you'd think you could at least see what's been collected on you. Instead, access usually depends on local public records law, how your police department has configured Flock's system, and whether anyone in the department feels like helping you figure out the request process in the first place.

That asymmetry is the whole story. Law enforcement agencies get dashboards, alerts, and nationwide data-sharing with other agencies' cameras. The person actually being surveilled gets a maze of public records requests, vague retention policies, and no guarantee the footage still exists by the time they ask. When transparency flows one direction only, it stops being accountability and starts being just another layer of control.

If your town has Flock cameras, you deserve to know where they are and who's watching. Check our camera map to see what's already been documented near you, and visit our take-action page if you want to push your city council for real transparency instead of a records-request scavenger hunt.
