AI-Powered License Plates Are Coming — And They Can Track You Everywhere

AI Policy Impact · 5 months ago

The short version: AI Policy Impact's video on AI-linked license plate tracking is a useful entry point, but the surveillance network it describes is already here, not coming.

Our Take

Credit to AI Policy Impact for putting a spotlight on where license plate tracking is headed, but we'd push back gently on the framing. This isn't some future threat on the horizon — Flock Safety and its competitors have already blanketed thousands of American neighborhoods with ALPR cameras that log every passing vehicle, build travel histories, and share that data across agencies with little oversight. The "AI-powered" angle is real and worth watching, but the baseline infrastructure for mass tracking is operating right now in your town, probably on a street you drive every day.

What makes this genre of video valuable is that it gets people asking the right question: who's watching, and why. The answer is usually a patchwork of police departments, HOAs, and private vendors who've entered into contracts most residents never voted on or even knew existed. Once that data exists, it doesn't stay contained to "finding stolen cars" — it becomes a searchable record of where you went to church, who you visited, what protest you drove to. AI layered on top just makes the pattern-matching faster and the dragnet wider.

If this video got your attention, don't stop at watching — go look at our camera map to see what's already deployed near you, and check our take-action page for ways to push back at the local level, from public records requests to city council meetings. The system runs on public indifference; staying informed is the first way to starve it.
