Flock Safety Cameras Prove Successful In Solving Crime in Rhode Island

Flock · 5 years ago

The short version: Flock Safety is recirculating a local Rhode Island news segment touting its cameras' crime-fighting wins, but the vendor-as-messenger framing leaves out the oversight questions that actually matter.

Our Take

Notice who's publishing this one: it's Flock Safety's own channel, repackaging a WLNE news hit as proof of concept. That's not independent journalism, it's marketing with a news chyron slapped on it. When the company selling the cameras is also the one curating the success stories, viewers don't get the boring but essential details — how many plates got scanned to produce these "wins," how long the data sat in a database, who else had access to it, and whether any of it touched immigration enforcement, out-of-state warrants, or dragnet searches that had nothing to do with the case being celebrated.

"It solved a crime" is doing a lot of work in these clips, and it's meant to shut down the harder conversation about whether blanketing a town in always-on plate readers is worth the tradeoff. Rhode Island residents deserve to know exactly where these cameras are, who's reviewing the footage, and what accountability exists if the system is misused — not just a highlight reel.
