BPD’s Drone as First Responder is Growing!
The short version: Brookhaven PD's own promo video touts citywide drone-as-first-responder expansion via Skydio and Axon, but skips the surveillance tradeoffs that come with routine aerial patrol.

Credit to the Brookhaven Police Department's channel for putting this out there, but let's be clear about what we're watching: a police department marketing its own expanding surveillance program using its own best-case footage. A drone arriving in seconds to help nab a shoplifter makes for a great highlight reel. It tells you nothing about how often that drone is airborne when there's no active call, what it records along the way, how long that footage sits in Axon's cloud, or who else — federal agencies, other departments, data brokers — might eventually get access to it.
Drone-as-first-responder programs like this one are quietly becoming a third leg of the local surveillance stool, alongside ALPRs and fixed cameras. When a city council approves "citywide coverage," that's not just one drone answering one 911 call — it's a standing aerial infrastructure that can be tasked, expanded, and repurposed with almost no public input after the initial vote. Skydio and Axon aren't in the business of transparency; they're in the business of selling more coverage, more sensors, more retention.
None of this makes the shoplifting response story false, but it does make it incomplete.
