PhantomPlates' video is basically a product demo dressed up as a privacy hack: a remote-activated cover that flips over your plate to dodge tolls, tickets, and license plate readers. We get the appeal — nobody likes feeling tracked every time they drive — but a motorized cover that conceals your tag while moving is plate concealment, plain and simple, and it's illegal in nearly every state. This isn't a loophole, it's a ticket (or worse) waiting to happen, and it does nothing to slow down the thousands of Flock Safety cameras quietly logging plates across the country.

The bigger problem with gadgets like this is that they treat ALPR surveillance as a personal inconvenience to outsmart, rather than what it actually is: a dragnet system built into intersections, neighborhoods, and highways that logs everyone's movements whether you're a suspect or not.
