Surveillance Is Already Here

Timcast Media Shorts · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Timcast Media Shorts argues the Flock debate is a distraction — ALPR tracking has already been quietly normalized for years, and that's the real scandal.

Our Take

Credit to Timcast Media Shorts for naming the thing a lot of coverage dances around: the "Flock debate" isn't really about one company. It's about a surveillance architecture that's been metastasizing for years while most people weren't looking. Flock Safety is the loudest, most visible player right now, but the underlying capability — camera networks silently logging where your car goes, when, and how often — predates the current news cycle and will outlast it if nothing changes.

That's the trap of treating this as a single-vendor scandal. Swap out the brand, and the data pipeline survives: plate, timestamp, location, repeat for every car on the road, stitched into a travel history that no judge signed off on and no law clearly governs. Whether it's Flock or the next company that licenses the tech to your local PD, the privacy harm is identical. The fight was never really about a logo on the camera housing.

If this clip makes you wonder whether a reader is already sitting on a pole near your house, it probably is — check our camera map to see what's been documented in your area, and visit take action for concrete steps to push back locally.
