FlockYou: Detect Flock Safety ALPR Cameras #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 months ago

The short version: STS Technologies' FlockYou gadget sniffs out Flock Safety camera wifi signatures, turning 'is that pole watching me?' into a quick yes-or-no.

Our Take

STS Technologies LLC's FlockYou is a neat piece of grassroots counter-surveillance: a passive WiFi scanner tuned to the signal patterns Flock Safety's ALPR units broadcast. You're not hacking anything, you're just listening to what's already in the air and translating it into 'yes, there's probably a camera near you.' That's a meaningful upgrade from squinting at a pole and guessing whether that gray box is a Flock unit or just a utility fixture.

What makes this worth covering isn't the gadget itself, it's what it represents. Flock's network has spread across thousands of neighborhoods with little public debate, and most residents have no idea how many of these cameras log their daily movements. Tools like FlockYou, alongside crowd-sourced documentation, are how ordinary people are clawing back some visibility into a system designed to be invisible. Awareness is step one; knowing where the cameras actually are is step two, which is exactly why we keep building out our camera map.

Detection hardware is handy, but it doesn't replace organizing. If you find a camera, confirmed by gadget, documentation, or plain observation, report it and push your local council on retention policies and data-sharing agreements. Check our take-action page for templates and next steps. Credit to STS Technologies for building something tangible in a fight that's mostly fought with records requests and public comment slots.
