Saving The Nation From Mass Surveillance

Nomark Project · 3 months ago

The short version: A creator kicks off a campaign against Flock Safety ALPRs, and we're glad to see more eyes turning toward this quietly expanding network.

Our Take

The Nomark Project is staking out an ambitious goal: pushing back on mass surveillance starting with Flock Safety's license plate readers. We don't know yet exactly what the full plan looks like, but the fact that creators outside the usual privacy-advocate circles are picking up this fight is a good sign. Flock's cameras have spread to thousands of communities with little public debate, and most residents have no idea their daily movements are being logged, stored, and shared across a growing law enforcement network.

What makes this moment important isn't any single video — it's the slow drip of attention finally catching up to how normalized ALPR surveillance has become. These systems were sold as tools for finding stolen cars, but the data trails they create can map out everywhere you go, who you see, and how often. That's a profile no company or police department should be building on ordinary people without consent or oversight.

If you want to see how far this has spread in your own area, check out our camera map, and if you're ready to push back locally, our take-action resources walk through how to raise it with your city council or police department.
