The short version: A creator traces surveillance history backwards to show how 'consent' was manufactured step by step — ALPRs are just the latest rung on that ladder.

Our Take

All Great Beginnings takes an interesting angle here: instead of starting with today's surveillance state and explaining how we got here, the video runs the tape backward, starting with the pole cameras and pocket trackers we live with now and tracing the lineage of 'agreement' back to its roots. It's a worthwhile reframe. Most of us never signed anything that said Flock Safety could log our plate, our location, and our travel patterns every time we drive past a gas station or church parking lot. We just... didn't opt out of a system we were never told about.

That's the real trick of mass surveillance infrastructure — it doesn't ask permission, it just normalizes itself one small, defensible-sounding step at a time. A camera here for 'stolen cars.' A database there for 'missing persons.' Before long you've got a nationwide network quietly logging the movements of everyone, guilty or not, with almost no public vote on whether that tradeoff was worth making. The video's backward-history approach is a good way to see that drift clearly, instead of accepting each new camera as an isolated, reasonable ask.

Credit to All Great Beginnings for putting the receipts in order. If you want to see how this plays out concretely in your own town, check our camera map to find ALPRs near you, and if you're ready to push back on a city council or school board installing them, our take-action page has the tools to start that fight.
