SHOCKING: Darth Vader CRASHES Town Hall to DEMAND More Flock Cameras & Total State Surveillance!

Hard Lens Media · 1 month ago

The short version: Hard Lens Media's Darth Vader stunt at a town hall is satire, but the punchline lands: boosters pitch Flock cameras as safety while asking for unchecked state power.

Our Take

Hard Lens Media's latest bit is obviously a joke — nobody actually expects a guy in a Vader costume to stand up at a town hall and demand "total state surveillance." But good satire works because it's not that far off from the real pitch. Town halls across the country really do feature officials and vendors standing up to ask for more ALPR cameras, framed as a modest safety upgrade, with little discussion of who controls the data, how long it's kept, or which agencies get to query it.

That's the trick Flock Safety and its boosters rely on: make the ask sound small and reasonable one meeting at a time, so nobody notices they're building a de facto national tracking network out of thousands of local contracts. A guy in a cape saying the quiet part loud is funny precisely because the real version of that pitch usually comes from someone in a polo shirt with a PowerPoint, and it works more often than it should.

Credit to Hard Lens Media for finding a way to make the absurdity land. If you want to see how much of this "total surveillance" is already installed near you, check our camera map, and if your town is about to get its own town-hall pitch, our take-action page has what you need to push back before the cameras go up.
