Flock Cameras Watching People on The Side of the Road

The Patriot Post · 2 months ago

The short version: The Patriot Post spotlights everyday roadside Flock cameras, a reminder that ALPR surveillance has become so routine most drivers never notice it.

Our Take

Credit to The Patriot Post for pointing a camera at the cameras. The clip's premise is simple but important: these license plate readers aren't hidden in some secret facility, they're bolted to poles along ordinary roads, quietly logging every vehicle that passes. That mundane visibility is exactly the problem — surveillance infrastructure this routine stops feeling like surveillance at all, which is precisely how it gets normalized.

"Is the cat out of the bag?" is the right question to be asking. Flock Safety has spent years expanding into thousands of communities with minimal public debate, and most residents only discover a camera exists when they happen to glance at the right roadside pole. Once people start noticing, the next question is always who's watching the footage, how long it's kept, and who it's shared with — questions Flock and its police partners rarely answer with much transparency.

If this video made you look twice at the poles on your own commute, that's the point. Check our map to see what's been documented near you, and visit take-action for ways to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your town.
