UK mast not gone through the required channels

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 2 months ago

The short version: A UK channel flags a surveillance mast installed without proper approval, echoing the same permitting shortcuts Flock and local police use across the US.

Our Take

The specifics in this video are thin and the channel covers a wide swath of surveillance and digital-ID topics, so we're not going to pretend we know the full planning history behind this particular mast. But the core complaint — that surveillance hardware went up without going through the required approval channels — is exactly the pattern we track here in the States with Flock Safety cameras. Procurement that skips public comment, installations that outpace any zoning or council review, contracts signed quietly between a vendor and a police department before residents even know a pole is going in.

Whether it's a mast in the UK or an ALPR camera bolted to a stop sign in a American suburb, the playbook is the same: move fast, normalize the hardware, and let oversight catch up later if it ever does. That's not an accident. Vendors and agencies both know that public scrutiny before installation is far more dangerous to their rollout plans than public complaints after the fact. By the time anyone asks the right questions, the camera's already been running for months and the data's already been shared.

Credit to the Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency channel for keeping an eye on infrastructure that slips in sideways. If you want to see what's already been installed in your own community without a public hearing, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on a local deployment, our take-action page has the tools to start.
