Ep. 10 CISS PISS Test - Flock Cameras

Joey Greer · 5 months ago

The short version: Joey Greer's latest dispatch takes a irreverent, DIY swing at Flock Safety's ALPR network, and the format matters as much as the findings.

Our Take

Joey Greer's Episode 10 keeps doing what independent creators do best: poking at Flock Safety's camera network with a skeptic's eye and a camera of his own. We don't know every detail of his testing method from the title alone, and we're not going to pretend we do — but the instinct to go look at these poles yourself, rather than take a city council's press release at face value, is exactly the kind of grassroots scrutiny this beat needs.

That matters because Flock's pitch to local governments is almost always the same: trust the system, trust the vendor, trust the data retention policy. Creators who show up with a notebook and a camera and ask "does this actually work the way they say, and who's watching the watchers" are doing accountability journalism whether YouTube calls it that or not. Credit to Joey Greer for putting in the fieldwork and making it public instead of just complaining into the void.

If this video has you wondering whether your own block has one of these poles, check our map to see what's been documented near you, and if you want to push back at a council meeting or file a records request, our take-action page has the templates to get you started.
