Flock Cameras: Privacy vs. Justice #shorts

DTG Podcast · 6 days ago

The short version: DTG Podcast's short rightly flags that Flock's 'crime-solving' pitch ignores how easily the same database can be weaponized for stalking and abuse.

Our Take

Credit to the DTG Podcast for packing a real tension into a 60-second short: Flock Safety cameras are sold as a crime-fighting tool, but the same infrastructure that flags a stolen car can just as easily be misused by someone with a badge and a bad reason to look up an ex. That's not a hypothetical edge case — it's the predictable outcome of building a nationwide, always-on vehicle tracking network and trusting that every person with database access will use it responsibly, forever.

The 'privacy vs. justice' framing in the title is a little too tidy for our taste. This isn't a binary where you pick one side and lose the other. Mass ALPR surveillance can absolutely help close some cases while simultaneously creating a surveillance tool ripe for abuse, with little transparency about who's searching your plate, how often, or why. Departments rarely audit this stuff until a scandal forces their hand, and by then the damage — to a stalking victim, a protester, an immigrant family — is already done.

If a video like this makes you wonder whether there's a Flock camera on your own commute, check our camera map to see what's already been documented near you, and head to take-action for concrete steps to push back at the local level.
