flock camera map #Shorts

Google Trend Daily · 2 months ago

The short version: A quick viral Short reduces Flock's sprawling ALPR network to a 'secret map,' but the real story is how unsecret and unaccountable it actually is.

Our Take

Credit to Google Trend Daily for putting Flock Safety in front of a short-form audience that scrolls past most surveillance stories entirely. The framing of a 'secret national surveillance map' makes for a punchy hook, and it's not wrong that most drivers have no idea their plate, location, and travel patterns are being logged by a private company's cameras every time they pass through town.

But 'secret' undersells the problem. Flock's network isn't hidden so much as it's just never explained to the people paying for it. Thousands of these cameras sit on public roads, funded by local budgets, feeding a database that police departments across state lines can query — often with little public debate about retention windows, audit logs, or who else gets access. The surveillance isn't covert, it's just unexamined, and that's arguably worse because it means there's been no real consent.

If a 60-second video is the first time you're hearing about this, that's exactly the gap we're trying to close. Check our camera map to see what's actually been documented near you, and head to take-action if you want to push back at a city council meeting instead of just a comment section.
