Every ALPR Search Should Leave an Audit Trail #Shorts

Buntai · 3 weeks ago

The short version: A short from creator Buntai makes the simple case that every ALPR lookup needs a logged reason, not just a click of a button.

Our Take

Buntai's short cuts to the heart of what's wrong with how most departments run Flock Safety systems: searches happen in seconds, with no requirement that an officer state why they're pulling someone's travel history. A database that can tell you everywhere a car has been in the last 30 days is a powerful tool, and powerful tools without logging and justification requirements get abused — for stalking, for personal grudges, for fishing expeditions that have nothing to do with an actual investigation.

"Audit trail" sounds like a bureaucratic nicety, but it's the difference between accountability and a black box. If every search isn't tied to a case number, a stated reason, and a record that can be independently reviewed, then claims of "we only use this for serious crimes" are just talk. Most public Flock contracts and audit policies are vague or unenforced, which means the technology is only as trustworthy as the honor system — and history shows that doesn't hold up.

This is exactly why we track where these cameras are going up in the first place. Check our map to see what's been deployed near you, and if your city is considering a Flock contract, push for real audit requirements before the cameras go in — our take-action page has tools to help you do it.
