Heroic woman goes VIRAL with anti-flock cameras rant!

Occupy Democrats · 2 months ago

The short version: A Santa Clarita resident's viral council speech spotlights how easily a single officer with a grudge can weaponize Flock's ALPR network, no hacking required.

Our Take

Credit to Occupy Democrats for surfacing this clip, but the real credit belongs to Charlotte, the Santa Clarita resident who did what too few city councils ever ask elected officials to do: follow the logic of unaudited surveillance all the way to its conclusion. Her argument isn't hypothetical alarmism — it's the plain mechanics of these systems. When a database logs every plate that passes a camera and hands officers instant, searchable location history, the danger was never limited to some hacker or foreign adversary. It's the guy down the hall with a badge and a bad breakup.

The case she raised — an officer allegedly running his estranged wife's plate hundreds of times, dressed up as unrelated investigations — is exactly the scenario departments insist 'couldn't happen here' right up until it's their own audit log. That's the point: without real, independent audits and hard consequences, the honor system is the only thing standing between a citizen and an officer's personal obsession. Flock's own marketing leans on trust; it rarely leans on oversight.

This is why we keep pushing the same two things: know where these cameras actually are, and show up when your council is deciding whether to buy more of them. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your town, and if you want to do what Charlotte did, our take-action guide walks you through it.
