As crime spikes, residents choose Flock Safety to stop crime

Flock · 5 years ago

The short version: Flock's own channel reposts a friendly Fox 11 LA segment framing ALPRs as a simple fix for crime, skipping the privacy tradeoffs entirely.

Our Take

Notice who's doing the talking here: this isn't an independent news investigation, it's Flock Safety's own YouTube channel republishing a local TV segment that reads like a company press release with a reporter's voiceover. When the camera vendor controls the footage and the framing, you get exactly what you'd expect — worried residents, a tidy narrative about crime going down, and zero mention of how long the data is kept, who else can query it, or what happens when the system misfires on an innocent driver.

'Residents choose Flock' makes it sound like a grassroots decision, but in practice these rollouts are usually approved by a handful of city council members or an HOA board, often with little public debate about data retention, interagency sharing, or ICE access. A ring of ALPR cameras recording every plate that passes, regardless of suspicion, is a fundamentally different proposition than a cop on patrol, and 'it feels safer' isn't the same as evidence that it works or that it's worth the tradeoff.

We don't fault Fox 11 for covering a local story, but viewers deserve to know they're watching content sourced and shared by the company selling the hardware. Check our map to see if Flock cameras are already logging your plate, and visit take action if you want to push back before the next 'residents choose Flock' segment runs in your town.
