Stop flockin around and wake up people

Between The Lines Headquarters · 5 months ago

The short version: A creator's blunt 'No Flock Zone' rant ties ALPR expansion to data-center sprawl, environmental cost, and surveillance creep — and the connection is worth taking seriously.

Our Take

Between The Lines Headquarters isn't mincing words with this one, and honestly, the bluntness is refreshing. The core point under the frustration is sound: every Flock camera bolted to a pole is also a data pipeline feeding into server farms somewhere, and those facilities aren't neutral infrastructure — they're power-hungry, water-hungry, and built specifically to store and cross-reference the movements of ordinary people who never consented to be tracked.

We talk a lot about the cameras themselves because they're the visible edge of the system, but the video's instinct to follow the wire to the data center is the right one. Flock's business model depends on volume — more plates, more timestamps, more locations, more retention — and that data has to live and get processed somewhere. 'More harm than good' is a fair verdict when you weigh a marginal clearance-rate bump against a permanent, searchable record of where everyone drives.
