Credit to KSN TV for flagging that Flock Safety is adjusting how it stores license plate data as pressure from communities and journalists builds. When a surveillance vendor starts announcing internal policy changes on its own terms, that's usually a sign the public scrutiny is working — but it's also a reminder that the company, not the public, still controls the dial on retention windows, audit access, and who gets to see the fine print.
Corporate self-regulation is not the same as an enforceable local ordinance or a state law with teeth. Flock can change its data policies again next quarter, or reverse course entirely, and most residents in a given city will never know the difference unless local officials demand a real audit and publish it. 'Increased oversight' should mean independent oversight — public records, retention limits written into contracts, and audit logs any resident can request — not a press-friendly tweak announced ahead of a city council vote.
