The Camera On That Pole Isn't What You Think

The Bits of It · 1 month ago

The short version: A YouTube explainer from The Bits of It pulls back the curtain on ALPRs, and we're glad more creators are asking who's watching the watchers.

Our Take

The Bits of It just did something a lot of local news segments still won't: call these things what they are. Not "speed cameras," not "traffic safety tools" — license plate readers that log every car passing by, whether you've done anything wrong or not. That distinction matters, because the branding on the pole shapes whether people shrug or start asking questions.

The uncomfortable part this video gets at is scale. One camera catching one plate is a traffic stop. Thousands of cameras logging millions of plates a day, stitched into a searchable history of where you've driven, is a surveillance network — and it's being built out largely without public votes, warrants, or meaningful oversight. Most residents have no idea how many of these things are mounted in their own town until they go looking.

That's the gap we try to close. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your neighborhood, and if you want to push back, our take-action page has concrete steps for getting these systems in front of your city council instead of letting them get installed quietly.
