Political Matrix News: Flock Cameras: Privacy vs. Safety

Palafox Media Network · 1 month ago

The short version: Palafox Media Network's Political Matrix News tackles the privacy-vs-safety framing around Flock cameras, a debate we think tilts too easily toward 'safety' without scrutiny.

Our Take

Credit to Palafox Media Network for putting Flock cameras in front of a general-interest audience on Political Matrix News. Most people still have no idea these license plate readers exist on their daily commute, let alone that a private company is aggregating the data and sharing it with police departments across jurisdictions. Just getting 'Greg' and friends talking about it on camera is a win for public awareness.

But we'd push back on the framing itself. 'Privacy vs. safety' assumes a trade-off that the evidence doesn't really support — these systems log the movements of overwhelmingly innocent people, and the safety gains claimed by Flock and its police partners are rarely subjected to independent audit. The real question isn't whether you have something to hide; it's who has access to a permanent record of everywhere your car has been, for how long, and with what oversight. That's a governance problem, not a trade-off.
