Julian Respondes to Darth Vader is SHILLING For Flock Cams!

The short version: A Darth Vader costume at a San Diego council meeting made the Flock surveillance pitch look as absurd as it actually is.

Our Take

Credit to Julian Dorey Clips for surfacing this: sometimes satire lands harder than a spreadsheet of privacy stats. Roger Ralphs showing up to a San Diego Public Safety committee meeting in a Darth Vader costume, breathing through the mic and thanking Flock for helping "the emperor" track "rebel scum" from playground to pool to gym, is funny precisely because it's not exaggerating much. Strip away the cape and what's left is an accurate description of what a networked ALPR system does — it logs movement patterns of ordinary people, kids included, and hands that data to whoever holds institutional power.

That's the joke and the warning in one breath. Flock's pitch to city councils is always about catching the bad guys, but the infrastructure doesn't care who's asking to query it. Once a city wires up enough cameras to track cars from a public pool to a gymnasium, you've built a surveillance backbone that outlives whatever administration approved it — and history says these systems get repurposed, leaked, or abused. A guy in a Vader mask forced a room full of officials to sit with that logic for two minutes, which is more than most council presentations manage.

If your city is debating a Flock contract, don't wait for someone in a costume to make the point for you. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your neighborhood, and use our take-action resources to show up to the meeting yourself — no lightsaber required.
