Monroe PD: Tech Leads to Arrests in Home Shooting

Flock · 7 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promotional video credits its ALPR network with cracking a Monroe shooting case, but offers zero detail on the dragnet scanning of innocent drivers that made it possible.

Our Take

Note the source: this clip comes straight from Flock Safety's corporate YouTube channel, not a local news outlet or independent reporter. That matters. These "tech leads to arrests" videos are marketing material designed to sell more cameras to more city councils, and they're built around the one case out of thousands where the system worked as advertised and nobody's data was misused, leaked, or used for something other than solving violent crime.

Nobody disputes that a home getting hit by gunfire ten-plus times is terrifying and deserves a fast, serious police response. But "it helped solve this one case" is not the same as "this justifies photographing and logging the location of every car that drives through Monroe, every day, indefinitely." Flock never mentions retention windows, who else can query that data, whether it's shared with other agencies or ICE, or how often these systems misread plates and send officers after the wrong car. Those are the questions a real accountability story would ask.

If you want to know whether your own neighborhood is already wired into this network, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just watch the ad, see what you can actually do about it.
