Fact check: Is there a Flock camera in downtown Marquette?

My UP Now · 1 month ago

The short version: A Michigan news outlet fact-checked a crowdsourced report of a Flock camera in downtown Marquette, showing why public verification of ALPR deployments matters.

Our Take

Credit to My UP Now for doing exactly the kind of legwork local newsrooms should be doing more of: when a surveillance camera map flags a new Flock installation, someone goes and checks instead of just shrugging it off. That a story like this even has to run as a "fact check" says a lot about how quietly these systems get installed. No public hearing, no press release, just a pole at a busy intersection that residents have to notice on their own.

This is the exact gap crowdsourced tracking tools exist to fill. Flock Safety and the police departments that contract with it rarely publicize camera locations in detail, so it falls to journalists, researchers, and regular drivers to confirm what's actually watching them on their daily commute. Whether or not Marquette's camera turns out to be confirmed, the bigger story is that a mid-sized Upper Peninsula city is now part of the same conversation happening in suburbs and small towns across the country: license plate readers showing up with little transparency and even less public debate.

If you want to see what's been logged near you, check our map, and if you'd rather push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your own community, our take-action page has a starting point.
