Man Takes Down a Flock Camera in Broad Daylight 😳

Derrick Evans · 2 months ago

The short version: A viral clip of a San Francisco man ripping down a Flock ALPR camera shows how raw public frustration with unaccountable surveillance has become.

Our Take

Derrick Evans' short clip of a man yanking a Flock Safety camera off its pole in broad daylight is getting attention for the obvious reason: it's satisfying to watch someone push back against a surveillance network most people never voted for. Flock's cameras have spread into thousands of neighborhoods with little public debate, feeding license plate data into a system that police departments, and sometimes private companies and federal agencies, can query far beyond the local crime the cameras were pitched to solve.

We don't cheer property destruction β€” it's illegal, it gets people arrested, and it doesn't scale as a strategy. But the impulse behind it is worth taking seriously. When residents feel like the only way to be heard is to physically remove a camera, that's a sign the normal channels β€” city council meetings, public comment periods, contract reviews β€” aren't working, or that people don't even know those channels exist. Cities keep approving these deployments in quiet votes, well after most residents have stopped paying attention.

If you're frustrated by an ALPR near you, there are ways to fight back that don't end in a citation. Check our map to see what's already been documented in your area, and use our take-action resources to push for transparency, retention limits, and public votes before the next camera goes up.
