Data centres and the digital prison

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 4 months ago

The short version: A broad mass-surveillance channel frames data centers as the backbone of a 'digital prison,' a warning that applies directly to Flock's growing ALPR data infrastructure.

Our Take

This video, from a channel that covers digital ID, surveillance, and central bank currencies broadly, zooms out to the physical plumbing of the surveillance state: the data centers that store and process the trillions of data points being collected on ordinary people. It's easy to fixate on the cameras and sensors themselves, but the warehouses full of servers quietly retaining your movements are just as important to the story — and usually get a lot less scrutiny.

That's exactly the blind spot we try to fill when it comes to Flock Safety. Every ALPR camera bolted to a pole is feeding a growing national database of where you drove, when, and how often, all sitting in the cloud infrastructure of a private company with its own retention policies, law enforcement partnerships, and breach risks. The video's broader argument — that these systems, taken together, start to resemble infrastructure for a 'digital prison' — isn't hyperbole when you consider how normalized constant location tracking has become in American towns that never voted on it.

Credit to the creator for keeping attention on the infrastructure layer most people never think about. If you want to see how much of this is already built in your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just watch it happen, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the local level.
