They're Tracking You: Law Enforcement's Hidden Surveillance

3RD SHIFT With ABREW · 2 months ago

The short version: 3RD SHIFT With ABREW's video frames Flock cameras as a 'safety vs. surveillance' question, and we think the answer is clear: it's surveillance.

Our Take

Credit to 3RD SHIFT With ABREW for putting the question plainly: are Flock cameras catching dangerous drivers, or are they building a permanent record of where every one of us goes? That framing matters because Flock and its law enforcement partners almost always sell these networks as narrow safety tools — find the stolen car, catch the hit-and-run — while quietly logging the plate, location, and timestamp of every vehicle that passes, guilty or not. Texting while driving and tinted windows are the easy sell. The database that remembers your commute for weeks or months afterward is the part that doesn't make the press release.

This is the core problem with ALPR networks: there's no opt-out, no warrant requirement in most places, and very little transparency about who can query your travel history later — an ex, a hacker, an agency hundreds of miles away with no local oversight. A camera that can flag a wanted plate in real time doesn't need to retain a database of innocent people's movements, but that's exactly the architecture Flock has built and sold to thousands of agencies.

If a video like this gets you wondering whether there's a camera on your own street, check our map to see what's already been documented near you, and head to take action if you want to push back on your local department or city council.
