Florida Governor Candidate Vows to Ban Flock Cameras and Halt Mass Surveillance

The short version: A Florida gubernatorial hopeful is campaigning against Flock Safety ALPRs, proof that opposing mass surveillance is becoming a viable political platform.

Our Take

Credit to Nunya Business for flagging this one: when a candidate for governor puts banning license plate readers in a campaign platform, that's a sign the conversation around Flock Safety has moved well beyond privacy wonks and local council meetings. Florida has become one of the densest Flock states in the country, and it makes sense that the backlash is surfacing at the state level now, not just in city hearings.

We don't know yet how far this candidate will actually push the issue if elected, or whether "ban" means a real statutory prohibition versus a messaging talking point. Campaign promises on surveillance tech have a way of softening once law enforcement lobbying kicks in. But the fact that a gubernatorial run is staking out ALPR abolition as a selling point tells you something about where public sentiment is heading — people are tired of having their daily movements logged by a private company's camera network with little oversight and even less public input.

Whatever happens in Florida's race, the pressure has to come from residents who know exactly what's watching them. Check our camera map to see what's already been installed near you, and head to take action if you want to push back before it becomes someone else's campaign promise instead of your own city council's decision.
