Credit to ADictionary for what is, on its face, the least dramatic video we'll ever cover: a text-to-speech voice reading a dictionary entry for "automatic number plate recognition." No opinion, no agenda, just a definition pulled from Wiktionary. And yet, even this bare-bones explainer can't avoid the word that matters most — surveillance. That's the tell. When lexicographers themselves classify ALPR as a surveillance method, it's worth asking why so much of the public still has no idea these cameras are bolted to poles on their own street.
That's the real problem with ALPR in 2024: it's become so normalized that it needs a dictionary entry at all, yet so invisible that most drivers couldn't tell you where the nearest camera is pointed or who's storing the plate reads it captures. A one-sentence definition can tell you what the technology is. It can't tell you that Flock Safety and similar vendors have quietly wired thousands of neighborhoods into networks that log every passing car, often with little oversight and even less public input.
